French fleet Bombing 1940
Churchill ordered the bombing of the French fleet otherwise they would fall into the Nazi’s hands. This resulted in the deaths of 1297 french servicemen.
British retreat
De Gaulle saw the British 300,000 men retreat from Dunkirk as a betrayal to the French people. It meant that the French were virtually forced into surrender of face execution.
EEC
When De Gaulle became one of the founding fathers of the EEC with the Treaty of Rome, he vetoed Britain’s entry 2 times.
What power did De Gaulle actually have?
None. He was the symbol of french resistance who led the Free French movement from Britain. De Gualle was not a political leader with a mandate or a high ranking official, he had no authority.
