Chronic Venous Insufficiency Flashcards
1
Q
What is chronic venous insufficiency?
A
- Inability to pump blood back to the heart
2
Q
What causes CVI?
A
- Imbalance of Starlings forces and exudate
- Active movements causing pressure in the foot to drop from 90 to 30
- Higher ambulatory VP causes failure of muscle pumps/valves
3
Q
What does CVI lead to?
A
- Venous hypertension
- Venous engorgement
- Venous stasis
4
Q
Signs?
A
- Ankle oedema
- Varicose veins
- Telangectasia
- Venous ecnzema
- Erythema
- Leg ulceration
5
Q
What can cause the initial imbalance in starlings forces resulting in CVI?
A
- Superficial venous reflux
- Deep vein reflux
- Venous obstruction
- Neuromuscular
- Obesity
- Inactivity
6
Q
Initial tests?
A
- ABPI
- Duplex
- Start by excluding arterial disease
7
Q
What is duplex?
A
- Doppler ultrasound
8
Q
What treatments are there for CVI?
A
- Compression therapy
- Systemic/Topical therapy
- Exercise
9
Q
What is compression therapy?
A
- Use of elastic dressings to compress the leg and increase pressure
10
Q
What is topical therapy used for?
A
- Skin ulceration
11
Q
How would exercise help in CVI?
A
- Activation of the calf muscle pump
