9 phases of Chronic illness trajectory
1 pretrajectory phase: at risk
2-trajectory: initial symptoms- no dx
3- stable: diagnosis, symptoms are managed
4 unstable phase: symptoms reoccur, complications develop
5-acute phase: severe or unrelieved sx. Need for hospitalization.
6-crisis phase: critical or life threatening
7- comeback: recovery after acute phase
8 downward: sx worsen
9 dying phase:

What is diagnosis of death based on?
Legally based on brain death. Therefore death has occurred when patient has irreversible loss of all brain functions. No respiration or brain stem reflexes.

Remission: symptoms subside
Stable: symptoms are controlled
Exacerbation: symptoms are worsening
Contemporary view of sick role is:
patients partnering with healthcare provider in making healthcare decisions
