broad term for condition with chronic or recurring immune response and inflammation of the GI; can be SI or LI or a mixture; 2 most common are ulcerative colitis and crohn’s disease

NO ! there is no inflammation present, it is a functional dz

IBD pathogenesis
- clinical signs attribute to the mucosal cell infiltrates and inflammatory mediators
- releases compliment, prostanoids, leukotrienes, pro-inflammatory cytokines, leukocyte proteases, nitric oxide, O2 derived free radicals
IBD clinical signs
-extremely varied, species differentiation, location and severity
IBD species predilections
- basenjis
- lendehunds
- soft coated wheaten terriers
- irush setters
IBD in cats
- vomiting is the most frequent sign, unrelated to eating
- lethargy, change in appetite (increase OR decrease), loss of weight and condition
- hairball accumulation
IBD in dogs
- diarrhea is the most frequent sign, small or large bowl, usually chronic
- vomiting may be present
- borborygmus and flatus
- halitosis
- abdominal pain
- pica, polyphagia
PE possibilities for IBD cat and dog
-normal
-weight loss
-cachexia
-thick intestine
-mesenteric LN large
CAT ONLY : no edema
DOG ONLY : edema/ ascites is possible
what is the key to diagnose IBD and lymphangiectasia
biopsy (but consider therapeutic trials first)
