What is the 2 part aim of mission?
1 Conversion - continuing evangelism by helping people come to a personal faith in God.
2 Reconciliation - working to make the Christian message play a part in all of society, to bring peace and communication between people.
Give some examples of what can be done to carry out missionary work.
- Start up new churches
- Engaging with people about their views and talking to people from other religions
What is the significance of evangelism?
- Make Jesus known through both actions and messages with the intention of making people convert.
- Evangelism starts by forming a bond with non-Christians.
What is the house church movement?
Where Christians meet weekly at a house and say prayers, and study the Bible in small groups. Also to pray.
What is ecumenism?
Creating christian unity between different denominations. It recognises there are differences between denominations but aims to bring them together under the name of Jesus and his glory.
Who set up the WCC?
Orthodox and protestant churches including the Anglicans - RCC not a member but takes part in the group ‘Commsission on Faith and Order’
What is the main belief of WCC members?
- Jesus is their saviour
- Glory should be brought upon his name
What are the 3 visions of the WCC?
1) Visible unity between churches and one eucharistic fellowship
2) Promote Christianity through mission and evangelism
3) Engage Christian service by meeting human needs, seeking justice and peace, and upholding integrity of creation.
What do the WCC campaign?
- HIV/AIDS
- Food security
- Sustainable agriculture
- Climate change
What are 3 ecumenical communities?
Taize: Set up to give refugee to Jews escaping Nazis, dialogue and friendship between Protestant and RCC.
Iona: Scotland. Works for peace and social justice, renewal of worship and communities
Corrymeela: NI, encourage Protestant and RCC dialogue.
Give a reason as to why Christians get persecuted.
When carrying out missionary work, they are trying to convert religious and non-religious people.
This may cause offence and conflict.
What is an organisation that supports the persecuted church and what do they do?
Barnabas fund
- Aid is directed to churches or existing organisations
- Publicises christian persecution to governments and international groups to raise awareness
- They sign petitions, letters and campaigns and always pray for the church worldwide

Christian aid - aims to rid of poverty in 50 countries. Aims to put Jesus’s compassion and love into action.
