must be result of traumatic event, not meds or susbtance abuse

- marked alerations in arousal and reactivity: i.e. recklessness, hypervigilance, insomnia

psychodynamic theory
memories of event are either consciously supressed via distractions or repressed
bio theories
genetics: personality traits make more likely
noradrenergic system: trauma raises lvlvs or norepinephrine, inc sensitivity of norepinephrine receptors
crisis intervention ptsd
prolongued exposure therapy: made specifically for ptsd
- combo CBT involving imagery exposure and actual situations
- change though process
eye mvmnt desensitization: rapidly effective, moreso than exposure therapies
- client imagines situation and follows therapists fingers w eye until distress is reduced
- verbalize thoughts and change mindset
