Chpt 20 Flashcards
virus enters a cell, makes copies of itself, and causes the cell to burst. host cell is lysed and destroyed.
Lyctic Infection
the viral DNA that is embedded in the host’s DNA.
Prophage
small piece of circular DNA.
Plasmid
protein coat surrounding a virus.
Capsid
virus that contains RNA as their genetic information.
Retrovirus
ball-shaped bacteria.
Cocci
rod-shaped bacteria.
Bacilli
spiral or corkscrew-shaped bacteria.
Spirilla
(most animals including humans) take in organic molecules for both
energy and a supply of carbon.
Chemoheterotroph
use sunlight for energy, but they also need to take in organic
compounds as a carbon source.
Photoheterotrophs
use light energy to convert carbon dioxide and water to carbon
compounds and oxygen.
Photoautotrophs
make organic compound molecules from carbon dioxide (they do not
require light as a source of energy).
Chemoautotrophs
organisms that require a constant supply of oxygen in order to live.
Obligate Aerobes
must live in the absence of oxygen.
Obligate anaerobes
can survive with or without oxygen.
Facultative anaerobes
