Chp. 9: What do mean by 'strong'? Flashcards
bend strength
adding upward forces to the center of a material and an opposite downward force to the edges or vice versa until it breaks
shear strength
holding each end of a material and twisting it until it breaks, like a screw
tensile strength
pulling a material away from each other until it breaks
tensile load
applying a weight to create tension in a material
ultimate tensile strength (UTS)
when a material reaches it breaking strength
yield strength (YS)
load required to permanently stretch a material measured in terms of stress or psi
plastic strain
the deformation percentage caused by the yield strenght
compressive strength
adding a force on top of a material and “squishing” it until it breaks at an oblique angle
measurement for ultimate tensile strength
pounds per square (psi) dividing the weight or load by the cross sectional area
stress
the quantity given by the psi force or load (pounds) divided by area (square inches)
strain
a dimensionless quantity that is measured by dividing the extension or contraction by the original length, comes out as a ratio
stiffness
defined by a quantity as Young’s Modulus
Young’s modulus (YM)
stress applied divided by strain produced
