Chp 42 EXAM 4 Flashcards
What are the 3 types of Glia cells and what are their functions? SLIDE 9
*Astrocytes- Metabolic support, form blood-brain barrier, maintain stable amount of ions
*Microglia- Immune functions, remove cellular debris
*Myelin Sheath- Glial cells wrapped around axons (forms insulating layer), interrupted by non-insulated nodes of Ranvier, produced by oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells
There are three main types of neurons. What are they and how do their functions differ from one and another?
Sensory- Detect info from outer and inner conditions. Also called AFFERENT neurons (transmit to CNS)
Motor- Send signals away from CNS (EFFERENT neurons)
Interneurons- Form interconnections between other neurons. Critical for interpretation of info and response
- What is resting potential? How is it maintained (resting equilibrium met)?
Resting Membrane Potential- Unstimulated cell not sending action potentials
Membrane potential-
*Difference in charge along inside and outside surfaces of cell membrane
*Ion concentrations differ between the inside and outside of the cell
