Chp 41 Poem BEATUS ILLE Flashcards
Beatus ille, qui procul negotiis,
Blessed is he, who away from work
Ut prisca gens mortalium
Like the ancient race of men
Paterna rura bobus exercet suis
Cultivates his fathers farm with his oxen
Solutus omni faenore
Free from all debt
Neque excitatur classico miles truci
And a soldier, is not woken by the wild trumpet
Neque horret iratum mare
And angry, does not shudder at the sea
Forumque vitat et superba civum potentiorum limina
And avoids the forum and the arrogant thresholds of more powerful citizens
Aut in reducta valle mugientium prospectsr errantes greges
Or he may gaze out at the herds of wandering cattle, with the lowing cattle having returned to the valley
Aut pressa puris mella condit amphoris aut tondet infirmas oves
Or having pressed the honey may he put into clean pitchers, or may he sheer the tender sheep.
Liber iacere modo sub antiqua ilice
He delights to lie now under the ancient holm oak
Modo in tenaci gramine
Now on the clinging grass
Labuntur altisinterin rivis aquae,
At the same time he slips on the high banks of water
Queruntur in silvis aves
The birds complain in the forests
Fontesque lymphis obstrepunt manantibus,
And springs murmur with flowing waters
Somnos quod invitet leves
Which invite light sleep
