Generic names
“Statins”: lovastatin, fluvastatin, atorvastatin, pravastatin
Indications:
Management of hypercholesteremia, decreased risk of angina, prevention of coronary artery disease, decrease cholesterol, slows atherosclerosis
How does it work?
HMG-CoA enzyme inhibition, preventing the synthesis of cholesterol, lowering LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, raises HDL slightly
SE
Rhabdo, hypersensitivity, hepatitis, abdomen cramps, constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, myopathy, arthralgia
Nursing interventions
Obtain dietary history, assess liver enzymes (ALT, AST), watch for muscle tenderness, watch CK levels, cholesterol levels, and triglyceride levels
What does CK levels evaluate?
- Measures concentration of the enzyme creatine kinase, -Indicative of muscle damage/injury–>heart muscle damage, rhabdomyolysis
Teaching patients
Limit grapefruit. Report muscle tenderness
