What is chlorphenamine
It is an antihistamine (piriton)
It binds to H1 histomine sites
This blocks histomine from binding and therefore reduces the allergic response
Indications of chlorphenamine
Symptomatic allergic reactions that are not anaphylactic but just causing patient distress
Alleviating distressing post adrenaline symptoms only after adrenaline is given and pt is stable
Presentation of chlorphenamine
Ampules: 10mg in 1ml
Tablet: 4mg of chlorphenamine
Oral solution: 2mg in 5ml
Route and dosage of chlorphenamine
10mg/1ml - IV / IM
Adults: 10mg/1m no repeat dosage
Contraindications of chlorphenamine
Known hypersensitivity
Pts that have been treated with MAOI (monoamine oxidase inhabitors) in the last 14 days
Cautions of chlorphenamine
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Hypotension
Epilepsy
Glaucoma
Severe liver disease
Side effects of chlorphenamine
Dry mouth
Sedation
Headache
Urinary retention
Psychomotor impairment
Gastrointestinal disturbance
Convulsions (rare)
