What is Narcan
Opiate antagonist which is used IV in emergency situations to reserve respiratory depression caused by overdoses of heroin, morphine or other opioids
How does narcan work
Naloxone is an opiate antagonist. It sits in receptor sites and blocks opioids from binding and activating
Indications of Narcan
Unconsciousness, associated with respiratory depression of unknown cause, where opioid overdose is a possibility
In cardiac arrest of opioid overdose is a cause
Contraindications of narcan
Neonates born to opioid addicted mothers can suffer from serious withdrawal effects. Emphasis should be on BVM ventilation and oxygenation
Cautions of narcan
None listed
Although can of be given to children under 12 in cardiac arrest
Presentation of narcan
Naloxone hydrochloride 400mcg in 1ml ampoule is the common presentation for paramedics.
Doseage (adult) narcan
Respiratory arrest/depression - IV/IO initial dose 400mcg
Cardiac arrest - IV/IO initial dose 400mcg
Respiratory arrest/depression - IM initial dose 400mcg
Expected effects of narcan
Patient will recover approx 5mins to full consciousness
Duration of action is usually 30-90mins
Side effects of narcan
If given to quickly it can cause acute withdrawal syndrome which is painful and distressing for the pt.
Tachycardia
Hypotension
Hypertension
Dizziness
Headache
Nausea
