Q

Chloride has a negative or positive charge?

A

NEGATIVE charge

Its negative charge neutralizes the positive charge of sodium (which is important for electrolyte balance).

Q

What is the best food source of chloride?

A

Nearly all of the chloride consumed in the diet is associated with sodium in table SALT

Abundant in processed foods

Found in eggs, fresh meats, seafood

Q

What are the functions of chloride? **

A
  1. Major electrolyte
  2. Formation of HYDROCHLORIC ACID (DIGESTIVE SYSTEM)
  3. Secreted by WBCs during phagocytosis to assist in the destruction of foreign substances (IMMUNE SYTEM)

  4. Exchange anion with HCO3 (bicarbonate); “Chloride shift” or “hamburger phenomenon.”

Q

Explain the chloride shift **

A

Helps with the exchange of HCO3 from RBCs

Where RBCs have C02 and the CO2 will be converted to HCO3 (which is impermeable to the RBCs, it can’t exit the RBCs). So, CHLORIDE moves into the RBC, allowing HCO3 to move out. This is one-way to get rid of CO2 in the body.

Q

(TRUE/FALSE)

High K+ intake reduces BP.

A

TRUE

A meta-analysis showed that potassium supplementation was associated with significant reductions in BOTH systolic and diastolic BP.

Effects were more apparent in African Americans and in those with HTN, than in whites and those w/o HTN
