4 rules of the ‘one-child policy’ ?
Before
One child per family.
Couples had to apply to be married and then apply again before having children.
Marriageable age was 22 men and 20 women .
Must be sterilised after first child or must abort any future pregnancies .
What were couples that conformed given? (5 things)
5-10% salary rise (urban)
Bigger land allocation (rural)
Extended maternity leave
Paid medical and hospital expenses
Priority access to housing, employment and free schooling for the child
What happened to people who did not conform?

They were deprived of the benefits
Made to pay large fines
Family allowances and medical benifits were withdrawn
What did the ‘Granny Police’ do?
Older women of the community were entrusted with the task of keeping everyone in line.

Why is the ‘one-child policy, unlikely to be relaxed?
As in 2008 China still had 1 million more births that deaths every 5 weeks and 600 million still live on less that 2 dollars a day.
3 problems of the ‘one-child policy’?
Only children were spoilt - “little emperor syndrome “.
Girls were placed in orphanages and left to die.
Women were forced to have abortions as late as the 9th month of pregnancy.
3 benefits with the ‘one- child policy’?
Famine that was previously expected never happened.
Population growth has slowed down enough for people to have enough jobs and food.
Increase of technology=increased standard of living.
A change to the ‘one child policy’?
Young couples who are both only children can have 2 children.
