as one of last communist societies in world, a critical issue in China’s future is the possible or not possible growth of a pro-demoracy movement.
it is a key element of any consideration of China’s future to decide what effect the impact of demonstration for democratic reforms will have
what does the chinese culture demand?
respect for the elders but their is responsibility for elders to provide security and happiness for the country.
how could respect for elders be challenged?
this cultural understanding (filial piety) that underpins Chinese life could be challenged by the materialism of globalisation and individual rights of democracy.
what is tech providing?
new platforms for exchanging ideas (censorship norm in China) , and suppression of medium such as internet and satellite TV only increases the tension between the govt and protesters.
if govt acts to suppress dissent, they face international pressure that can be mobilised very quickly through the internet
what does Sociologist Nancy Riley state about respect for elders?
states that changing dependency rations mean that there are fewer younger people to look after the growing elderly population and that smaller families and geographically mobile populations will put pressure on the government to provide support.

bring urban population from 760 million to close to billion, changing China into country where more than two-thirds of its people are city dwellers
age of marriage?
couples will continue to marry in 20s but as china becomes more modernised and Westernised, average age will increase by few years
what is key challenge to China?
creating nation free from discrimination against minority groups based on gender, ethnicity, sexuality and disability is key challenge for China at macro, meso and micro level.
