an alteration in the way things are done in society
what is progress?
implies a movement towards a higher level, improvement for the better quality of life for all ppl
does change always lead to an improvement in ppl’s lives?
sometimes no, as a culture may feel in that in changing, they are abandoning their traditional way of life which may be very important to the due to their religion
is change always good?
change is usually progress as no society would willingly change a good life for poor one
what can progress in S+C mean?
a movement towards:
- equal opportunities and status for both genders
- open and democratic government
- equal distribution and access to tech
- tolerance and acceptance based on social and cultural relativism
- narrowing economic inequalities
what could is considered progress in CHina?
implementation of OCP. Slowed population group contributed to more sustainable total population and improved economic circumstances overall.
however, what is considered a failure of the OCP?
- one child pressured to look after parents and grandparents 4-2-1
- rise of the ‘little emperor’ syndrome: overprotection, indulgence and excessive concern. no siblings can hinder social and emotional development of child
- problems associated with human rights and forced abortions, unregistered children not legally exist hence cant attend school
what is another sign of progress other than OCP?
population changes associated with urbanisation, e.g. better infrastructure and quality of life= access to transport, edu, health care, employment can be seen as sign of progression
how can urbanisation create problems on other hand?
if happens too quickly and planning authorities cant cope, create problems such as smog and water pollution, on a massive scale e.g. Beijing have environmental problems as result of rapid urban sprawl
