Why were there disagreements between the USSR and China?

A

Dissatisfaction with aid and recovery slow. Chinese felt USSR aid was insufficient and that it was holding back their economic recovery.
Disagreements over nuclear weaponry
China refused to sign the test ban treaty in 1963
Idealogical differences, Chinese were more doctrinaire communists
Mao viewed Khruschev as weak
Chinese Great Leap Forward, an attempt to develop industry and modernise economic system. Soviets viewed this as too labour intensive.

Why did US want to develop relations with China?

A

Nixon wanted withdrawal from Vietnam and needed the Chinese to effect this move.
Simply to gain Chinese support against the USSR
New markets for US industry
China regarded USSR as the stronger superpower so sought a counterbalance to Soviet dominance
China wanted US technology and investment to improve its industry

A

1971 Ping Pong diplomacy. China entered UN
1972 Nixon visited China
1972 Friendship treaty-renunciation of desire to dominate SE Asia, withdrawal of US troops from Taiwan and eventually full diplomatic recognition of China (1978)
Assisted the end of the Vietnam war
Increased trade - 2 billion dollars of orders to US
