Vomiting in children
A
Common
- In most cases, it will last no longer than 1 to 2 days
- Not sign of anything serious.

Common causes of N+V
A
- Gastro-enteritis
- Respiratory condition
- Problems with feeding
- Meningitis
- Overexcited/nervous

Red flag symptoms
A
- Systemically unwell with signs of infection or fever
- Frequent vomiting for > 24-48 hours
- Frequent regurgitation, failure to thrive, feeding/swallowing difficulties
- Recurrent episodes of unexplained vomiting
- Vomit is blood-stained or looks like ‘coffee grounds’
- Dehydration signs

Signs of dehydration in babies
A
- sunken eyes
- dry nappy
- drowsiness
- Cold hands and feet
- Pale and look unwell

Treatment for N+V
A
Diorylate
- ORS

Non-pharmacological treatment
A
- If your baby is vomiting, carry on breastfeeding or giving them milk feeds.
- If they seem dehydrated, they will need extra fluids.
- Children who don’t want to drink water, give them ice lollies.
