The APGAR score
A scoring system for assessing the status of a newborn that assigns a number value to each of the five areas of assessment.
APGAR stands for;
The five areas of activity in a newborn; - Appearance - Pulse - Grimace - Activity - Respiraitons We assign a number, 0, 1 or 2 to the infant for each category.
When assessing appearance
2 - Entire infant is pink
1 - Body is pink, hands or feet are blue
0 - Entire body is blue or pale
When assessing pulse
2 - More than 100 BPM
1 - Fewer than 100 BPM
0 - No palpable pulse
When assessing grimace
2 - Infant cries and moves foot away from finger when finger is snapped against foot
1 - Infant gives weak cry in response to stimulus
0 - Infant does not cry or react to stimulus
When assessing activity
2 - Infant resists attempt to straighten hips and knees
1 - Infant makes weak attempts to resist straightening
0 - Infant is completly limp
When assessing respiration
2 - Rapid respiration
1 - Slow respiration
0 - Absent respiration
You should assign an APGAR score
1 minute after birth
5 minutes after birth
Most babies will be 7+ within the first 10 minutes
