CHF & Angina: Therapeutic Use & Adverse Effects Flashcards
Therapeutic Use: Increases cardiac output
MOA: Causes the cardiac muscle to contract
more efficiently. Also causes decreased heart rate.
Digoxin (Cardiac Glycoside)
- Therapeutic Use: Increase blood flow to the heart muscle
- MOA: Cause vasodilation of coronary
arteries and veins.
Nitrates
call 911 after the first dose if pain unrelieved, period.
Nitrates (nitroglycerin)
Risk for _________ Toxicity (bradycardia, N&V, visual changes (halos), and arrhythmias).
- The GI signs are early symptoms
- This is a life-threatening condition. Monitor by
checking digoxin levels in the blood.
- Hypokalemia increases the risk of digoxin toxicity.
- Normal potassium level 3.5 – 5.0
Digoxin; cardiac glycosides
side/adverse effects
- Hypotension, palpitations, headache, weakness, sweating, flushing, N&V, dizziness.
Nitrate side/adverse effects
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Pregnancy, breastfeeding, severe anemia, increased intracranial pressure, hypersensitivity (allergy), and circulatory failure.
