- Right middle lobe consolidation (pneumonia) –> loss of right heart border
- Left lingula consolidation (pneumonia) –> loss of left heart border
- Right-sided pneumothorax –> no lung markings on right side, increased rib spacing on right side
Left-sided tension pneumothorax
Left-sided mass –> lung cancer
–> small cell or squamous bc centrally located
Right upper lung abscess –> cavitating mass
Bilateral hilar enlargement –> TB or sarcoidosis
Pleural effusion –> can see fluid level fill from base of lung
Severe shortness of breath. Recent weight loss
Massive left-sided pleural effusion (‘white-out’) with mediastinal shift –> heart and trachea displaced to the right (right lung clear)
Hx of asbestos exposure
mesothelioma –> pleural thickening with secondary pleural effusion (exudative)
Pulmonary oedema
Cardiomegaly
Normal CXR –> go through full interp.
Pulmonary fibrosis –> IPF
‘honeycomb’ pattern –> IPF
‘ground glass’ appearance –> ILD
Calcified pleural plaques –> caused by asbestos
‘signet ring sign’ –> bronchiectasis
- Hyperinflation, flattened hemidiaphragm
–> chronic COPD findings
- Caseating lesion –> right middle lobe –> TB
- Dx –> small cell lung cancer
Pulmonary oedema –> Kerley B lines, cardiomegaly
Cannonball metastases
