Chepter 5 - Tissues Flashcards
What are tissues?
A groups of cells that are similar in structure and that work together to carry out a particular task.
What are the 4 types of tissues?
- epithelial tissue
- connective tissue
- muscular tissue
- nervous tissue
What is epithelial tissue?
A covering or lining tissue.
What are some examples of epithelial tissue?
- covering of the heart, kidneys, intestines, liver and lungs
- lining of the heart, stomach and intestines
What are the characteristics of epithelial tissue?
- cells joined closely together
- vary in shape: thin and flat, column shaped and cube shaped
What is connective tissue?
The tissue that provides support for the body and helps to hold all of the body parts together.
What are the characteristics of connective tissue?
- cells are not close together
- separated by non cellular material called matrix
What are some examples of connective tissue?
- bone
- cartilage
- tendons
- ligaments
- fat storage tissue
What are the characteristics of muscle tissue?
- cells are long and thin, often called muscle fibres
What are the three types of muscular tissue?
- skeletal
- involuntary
- cardiac
What is skeletal muscle?
The muscles that are attached to bone.
What are the characteristics of skeletal muscle?
- voluntary muscle
- striated muscle
What is involuntary (smooth) muscle?
Cells that we cannot contract voluntarily.
What are some examples of involuntary (smooth) muscle?
- muscle found in walls of stomach and intestines
- walls of blood vessels
- Iris of the eye
- uterus
What are the characteristics of involuntary (smooth) muscle?
- smooth
- non-striated
