Chapter 2 - The Scientific Method Flashcards
What are the characteristics of a good hypothesis?
- It is a definitive statement
- It is short
- Has a single idea that can be tested
- Links 2 variables
What is an independent variable?
The factor being investigated
What is a dependent variable?
The factor that changes in response to the independent variable
What are controlled variables?
The factors that are kept the same for both the experimental and control groups
What is a human error?
A mistake.
Eg. Incorrectly reading the scale on an instrument, spilling liquid before measuring the volume
What is a random error?
Unpredictable errors that can occur in all experiments.
Eg. Stopping the stop watch too late
What are systematic errors?
Errors that occur because of the way in which an experiment is designed.
What are ethical principles involve in an investigation?
- Voluntary participation
- Informed consent
- Risk of harm
- Confidentiality
- Anomonimity
What is a placebo?
An inactive substance that looks like the real medications.
In what order do the variables go in a graph?
Independent, dependent
What axes do the variables go on in a graph?
Independent - horizontal
Dependent- vertical
