Chemistry- Mixing 2 Flashcards
What is the atomic number?
The number of protons and electrons in an atom
What is an atom?
The smallest particle of an element
What is chromatography?
A separation technique used to seperate soluble particles based on their size
What is a compound?
A pure substance made up of two or more elements joined together in a certain ratio
What is the difference between a diluted, concentrated and saturated substance?
A diluted substance is solvent with a little solute dissolved in it. A concentrated substance is solvent with lots of solute in it and a saturated substance is a solution that cannot dissolve any more solute.
What is distillation?
A separation technique to separate two liquids based on their boiling point.
What is an element?
A pure substance that is only made up of one type of atom
What is evaporation?
A separation technique to seperate a soluble solid from a solution.
What is filtering/filtration?
A separation technique to seperate an insoluble solid from a liquid
What is the difference between a pure and impure substance?
A pure substance is made up of only one particle, while an impure substance is made up of more than one type of particle (and isn’t chemically joined)
Define insoluble
Does not dissolve
Define soluble
Can dissolve
What is the mass number?
The number of protons and neutrons in an atoms nucleus
What is a mixture?
An impure substance made up of different substances that can be easily separated.
Define solute
The substance that dissolves
