Chemistry chapter 10 (Redox reaction) Flashcards
Define Oxidation.
When a substance gains oxygen during a reaction; when it loses an electron, or when its oxidation number increases
Define Reduction.
When a substance loses oxygen in a reaction; when it gains Electrons, and when oxidation number decreases.
Why is the reaction called redox reaction?
Because Oxidation never happens without Reduction.
Examples of Redox reaction.
Combustion- An exothermic reaction in which a substance reacts with an oxygen
Respiration- Process to breakdown food into simpler substances during digestion.
What are the oxidation number rules?
. Elements have an oxidation number of 0
. Group 1 has an oxidation of +1
. Group 2 has an oxidation number of +2
. Hydrogen has an oxidation number of +1
. Oxygen has an oxidation number of -2
. Fluorine and other Halogens have an oxidation number of -1
How to calculate oxidation number of an element in a compound?
The oxidation number of atoms in a compound must add up to 0
Define Oxidation number?
A number given to an element to determine if it has been oxidized or reduced.
What does LEO stand for?
Loss of Electron is Oxidation
What does GER stand for?
Gain of Electron is Reduction
What is Oxidizing Agent?
That substance which oxidizes somebody else. It is Reduced in the process. (Usually H,C,CO)
What is Reducing Agent?
That substance which reduces somebody else. It Oxidizes in the process. (Usually O from air, H2O2, KMnO4, K2CrO7)
