Chemistry Flashcards
What do atoms contain?
Most atoms contain Protons, neutrons, and electrons with some exceptions. They are mostly made up of empty space.
What is a proton?
A positively charged particle that makes up the nucleus of an atom
What is a neutron?
An uncharged particle that makes up the nucleus of an atom.
What are electrons?
negatively charged particles that orbit around the nucleus of an atom
Atomic mass unit(amu)
unit of measure for measuring masses of atoms, molecules, and particles
What are Neutral/Uncharged atoms?
An atom with no electrical charge. They have the same amount of protons and electrons. The positive and negative charges cancel out.
What holds atoms together?
The attraction between the positively charged protons and negatively charged electrons hold the atom together.
What determines what element an atom is?
The atomic number. The number of protons in an atom’s nucleus determines what element the atom is.
What is an atomic number?
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom.
What is the relationship between electrons and protons of atoms?
Each electron has a negative charge that is equal to the positive charge of a proton. The number of electrons outside the nucleus equals the number of protons in the nucleus.
What is atomic weight?
the number of protons and neutrons in an atom’s nucleus.
What are chemical bonds?
The attractive force holding atoms together
What is an ion
An atom with a different amount of electrons and protons, making the atom become charged. Atoms are uncharged and ions are charged
What is an isotope?
An atom of an element with a different atomic mass but same atomic number than other atoms of that element. atoms that have the same number of protons as other atoms of the same element but a different number of neutrons in its neutron.
Inert
A substance that is not reactive
