Chemical Reactions Flashcards
-processes by which chemicals interact with one another to form a new compound (when chemical bonds between atoms are formed and broken)
Chemical Reactions
Types of Chemical Reactions:
-substance reacts with oxygen gas, releasing a large amount of energy in the form of light and heat
Example:
hydrocarbons > results in the formation of carbon dioxide and water
Combustion Reactions
Types of Chemical Reactions:
-combination reactions
-reactions where two or more simple substances (generally elements) combine to form new compounds
Synthesis Reactions
Types of Chemical Reactions:
-a compound is broken down into simpler compounds or even its starting elements
-can be regarded as the opposite of synthesis reactions
- popossible through the application of either heat, energy, a catalyst, or a combination of these.
Decomposition Reactions
Types of Chemical Reactions:
-one element replaces a similar element in the compound (e.g. Daniell Cell)
Single Displacement Reactions
Types of Chemical Reactions:
-predicts whether single displacement reactions proceed or not
Activity Series
Types of Chemical Reactions:
-occurs when two ionic substances react and exchange ions with one another
Double Displacement Reactions
processes where reactants, (the starting materials) are transformed into new materials or substances
