chemical reactions Flashcards
what happens to atoms during a chemical reaction
atoms are rearranged
what is a chemical reaction
a process during which substances are changed into one or more new substances
what is the evidence of a chemical reaction
physical and chemical changes
what are the physical changes
change in size, shape, or state
what are the chemical changes
change in color, odor, energy, formation of a solid, formation of as
what/where are reactants
the left side of the equation, what is reacting
what/where are products
the right side of the equation, what is being produced
what are coefficients
the bigger number, applies to everything
what are subscripts
smaller number, only applies to the element directly before
what is the law of conservation of mass
mass cannot be created or destroyed
why is the law of conservation of mass important for balancing equations
both sides of the equation have to be equal
what is a synthesis reaction
a compound made from simpler materials (A + B ➡ AB)
what is a decomposition reaction
a compound is broken down into simpler compounds, or all the way (AB ➡ A + B)
what is combustion reaction
a compound containing carbon and hydrogen combines with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water
what is a single replacement reaction
one element that starts out by itself replaces another element i a compound, kicking it out (A + BC ➡ B + AC)
