chemical equilibrium Flashcards
What is chemical equilibrium?
When reactants/products stay constant over a period of time
What is the equilibrium constant equation?
(Σ[products]^coefficient)/ (Σ[reactants]^coefficient)
What does it mean if K is significantly greater than 1?
Products outnumber reactants
What does it mean is K is less than 1?
Reactants outnumber products
What is the relation between Kp and Kc in the gas phase?
Kp = Kc(RT)^Δn
How does K change if you reverse a reaction
K(forward) = 1/K(reverse)
How does K change if a chemical equation is multiplied by a factor
K is raised to that power
Does adding catalysts affect equilibrium?
No
What is the reaction quotient (Q)?
Equilibrium constant when not at equilibrium
What does it mean if Q is significantly greater than K
reaction moves to the left
What does it mean if Q is significantly smaller than K
reaction moves to the left
How does increased pressure affect equilibrium
Shifts reaction to the side with less moles
How does decreased pressure affect equilibrium
Shifts equilibrium to side with more moles
Does adding inert (non reactive) substances affect equilibrium?
No
Are concentrations/pressures of solids included in the equilbrium constant expression?
No
