Chemical Digestion Flashcards
Where is amylase produced
In the mouth and the pancreas.(Secreted into the duodenum)
What does amylase do
It digests starch into smaller sugars (maltose)
Where does protein digestion take place
The stomach and the duodenum
What is maltose digested by
Maltase (Into glucose)
What are proteases
A group of enzymes that break down proteins into amino acids
Where is pepsin produced
The stomach
Where are lipase enzymes produced
In the pancreas
Where is trypsin produced
The pancreas
Where is trypsin secreted into
The duodenum
Where is lipase secreted into
The duodenum
What does lipase digest
Lipids into fatty acids and glycerol
What is the role of hydrochloric acid
To kill bacteria in food and gives an acid pH for enzymes to work in the stomach
How is a low pH helpful in the stomach
The low pH kills bacteria in food we have ingested and denatures the enzymes in their cells, preventing them from carrying out cell reactions.
What is the optimum pH of pepsin
2
What is the role of bile
To neutralise hydrochloric acid
To break down large drops of fat into smaller ones. (Emulsification)
