Whats a gland?
An organ that produces and releases substances that perform a specific function in the body.
Whats an exocrine gland?
Secrete their products through a duct .
Eg.(Saliva glands)
Whats an endocrine gland?
Their product are secreted into the blood vessels that pass through the gland.
What are hormones?
Your body’s chemical messenger. They travel through your bloodstream to tissues and organs.
Hormones only affect particular tissues or organs if the cells of that tissue or organ have special chemical receptors for that particular hormone.
Whats the pituitary gland?
An endocrine gland.
Found at base of brain.
Produces luteinising hormone. (Stimulates egg release in females and testosterone production in males).
Whats the thyroid gland?
An endocrine gland.
Found at front of neck.
Produces thyroxine (Controls body’s metabolic rate).
Whats the pancreas?
An endocrine gland.
Found behind the stomach.
Produces insulin. (Lowers blood glucose).
Whats the adrenals?
An endocrine gland.
Found on top of the kidneys.
Produces adrenaline.
Whats the testes?
Found in scrotum.
Produces testosterone.
Whats the ovaries?
An endocrine gland.
Found on either side of the uterus.
Produces estrogen.
How does insulin work?
signals the liver and muscle and fat cells to take in glucose from the blood.
Whats type 1 diabetes?
A disease that causes your body to have too much glucose. In type 1 the body doesn’t produce insulin.
Whats type 2 diabetes?
A disease that causes your body to have too much glucose. In type 2 the insulin made cant work effectively, or you cant produce enough of it.
What are diabetes symptoms?
Excessive urination
Being very thirsty
Tiredness
Because glucose cant enter cells.
