Chemical Control Of Aquatic Weeds Flashcards
Contact Herbicide
Kills or injures plant on contact. Works quickly. More affective on annuals because of their smaller root systems.
Systemic Herbicide
Absorbed by a plant through roots, tissues, leaves, or stems. Once inside it kills plant completely, but works more slowly.
Translocation
Process by which plants absorb and transport water, nutrients, herbicides, and other materials throughout their structure.
Plant growth regulators
Herbicide that interrupts tissue development by causing abnormal plant growth or development, such as twisted stems or curled leaves.
Requirements for Underwater Plant Treatment
Sink the herbicide
Keep the herbicide near the plant
Prevent the herbicide from being diluted by surrounding water
Surfactant
Type of activator that is added to an herbicide. Improves effectiveness by increases the spreading and setting properties as well as helping liquid herbicide penetrate leaves.
Adjuvant
Material added to a pesticide formulation or tank mix to increase its effectiveness or safety. Added by both manufacturer and/or applicator.
How do oils improve effectiveness of herbicide?
Prevents spray solutions from evaporating.
Inverting Oil
Type of spray modifier that forms for,s droplet’s of water surrounded by oil. Surrounds and herbicide and increases its weight, allowing product to sink and reach plant without being diluted.
Buffering Agent
Type of adjuvant that can be used to improve the effectiveness of an herbicide when pH is excessively low.
Antifoaming Agent
Adjuvant that can be used when the water is too soft.
