Planktonic Algae

A

Single-celled algae found in ponds, reservoirs, and along lake shores. Plankton blooms can be dangerous and are often distinguished by a change in color at the water surface. Often indicates that a lake or pond is polluted with excess nutrients like nitrogen or phosphorus. Ex. Microcystis (blue-green algae, green algae)

Filamentous Algae

A

Algae composed of long cells attached end to end to form threads. Threads are often long and intertwined, forming mats on the bottom or the surface of the water. Found in ponds, lakes, and slow moving water. Ex. Spirogyra spp.

Algae that are large and resemble vascular plants that attach to the bottom of a water body. The two most common types are Chara and Nitella, both of which usually indicate clean water.
