CHEM 5.7 Names and Formulas of Ionic Compounds Flashcards
1
Q
Naming Ionic Compounds
A
The metal ion remains the same (Magnesium –> Magnesium)
The non-metal finishes in “ide” (Chlorine –> Chloride)
The compound becomes Magnesium Chloride.
2
Q
Be3N2
A
Beryllium Nitride
3
Q
Calcium Bromide
A
CaBr2
4
Q
Na2Se
A
Sodium Selenide
5
Q
Potassium Telluride
A
K2Te
6
Q
The criss-cross method
A
- Write the ionic charge (valence) of each element, above and to the right, for each element.
- Criss-cross the numbers down to become subscripts on the opposite element.
- Cancel to the lowest ratio by dividing by the largest common factor.

Q
Elements with Multiple Ionic Charges
A
When naming these compounds, you must look at the periodic table to see which options are available and then work backwards from your cross-over method and make sure to include the roman numerals in brackets.
CuBr2 –> Copper can have a charge of +1 or +2 –> Copper (|) Bromide
