BIO 3.1 The Hierarchy of Structure in Animals Flashcards
Hierarchy of Organization
Cells –> Tissue –> Organs –> Organ System –> Organism
TISSUE
A collection of similar cells that perform a particular, yet limited function.
ORGAN
A structure composed of different tissues working together to perform a complex bodily function.
ORGAN SYSTEM
One or more organs work together to perform a bodily function.
What are the 4 tissue types ?
–Muscle
–Nerve
–Epithelial
–Connective
Muscle Tissue
DESCRIPTION
–bundles of long cells
–contain specialized proteins
–capable of contracting
FUNCTION
–movement
Nerve Tissue
DESCRIPTION
–long, thin cells with fine branches at the end
–capable of conducting electrical impulses
FUNCTION
–sensory, able to detect changes in the environment
–communication within the body
–coordination of body function
Epithelial Tissue
DESCRIPTION
–thin sheets of tightly packed cells that cover surfaces and lining internal organs
FUNCTION
–protection from dehydration
–low friction surface
Connective Tissue
DESCRIPTION
–various types of cells and fibers held together by a liquid/solid/gel known as matrix
FUNCTION
–support and insulation
