he conquered many saxon territories expanding into what is today’s Germany. at the request of the pope he conquered the Lombard’s in northern Italy and took control of the land including Rome. he also conquered Bavaria and a portion of Spain
what happened when Charlemagne was in Rome in 800 CE
pope Leo III surprisingly crowned him emperor of the Romans over the Holy Roman Empire. he gave him the title Carolus Augustus. this title had no official power, but gave Charlemagne much respect throughout Europe
how was Charlemagne a strong leader and a good administrator
as he took over teritories, he allowed Frankish nobles to rule them. he also allowed the local cultures and laws to remain. a number of reforms occurred under his rule. he pushed education and supported many scholars
