Who is the poet of charge of the light brigade?
Alfred Lord Tennyson
What was the poets experience with Conflict/ War?
Poet laureate- after Crimean war he had to write a positive poem about bravery it the British public
(- so he twisted the tone into celebrating bravery and pride/patriotism.)
What is the message of charge of the light brigade?
We should be proud for those who give their lives in battle
(Except they didn’t “give” they were blindly led to)
What is the analysis of the Anaphora “Rode the six hundred”
Keeps focus on soldiers bravery.
Anaphora becomes Epistrophe during the battle (Stanza 4) -lines still end with “six hundred” but loose the first part- mirroring the loss of life-
yet keeping “six hundred” shows how they stayed together and did their duty even though many died. (sense of pride for bravery)
What is the analysis of the metaphor “Jaws of death” “Mouth of hell”
(Battlefield description) -danger/hell -image of Hell especially impactful to Christian readers- creates a sense of enormous danger- no way to survive.
“Mouth” “jaws” image suggests once they go in they will be crushed and won’t come out.- suggesting they were brave for just entering. (So when some do return they’re seen as impossibly brave and admirable)
What is the analysis of the repetition “Cannon to the right of them”
“Cannon to the left of them”
“Cannon in front of them”?
Shows the assault as unrelenting -they were sent blindly to their deaths reflected by the bombardment of weapons, implying it was not expected as they were not prepared. (+ sense of entrapment/ inescapablity)
(The clear/ orderly line of fire from the cannons contrasts the disorganised blundered soldiers who were fighting blindly)
(+highlights mechanical brutality of war which further emphasises their bravery)
Good comparisons to charge of the light brigade?
Bayonet charge: the different viewpoints of patriotism- its rejection in conflict and acceptance/encouragement in conflict.
(both still include wars brutality almost as if no matter what view the truth can’t possibly be hidden.??)
