Q

What is the analysis of the simile “lugged a rifle numb as a smashed arm”

A

Patriotism (“Patriotic tear”) was once an inspiration and has now given way to fear
And Power (Rifle) which was also an inspiration, is now weighing him down and making him an easier target.
(Sympathy for the deceived soldier)

(Simile shows how it’s impossible to explain war and show its brutality in its absolute truth/ entirety)

Q

What is the analysis of the Metaphor “Cold clockwork”?

A

Soldier has no choice in battle- being ordered by generals (the hand).
The clock represents fate- either Gov. or God that ultimately determines the soldiers position (No choice/Freedom)

+ “Cold” -the lack of compassion/ care for human life. (Sympathy for soldier and his likely fate)

Q

What is the analysis of the asyndetic list “King, honour, human dignity, etcetera”

A

Undermines the rhetoric of war, shows how to those in war these beliefs have become hollow and meaningless.

The brutality of war causes :”Dropped like luxuries” as they feel they must abandon these ideas in order to survive.

Q

Good comparisons for Bayonet Charge:

A

Remains- R focuses on the PTSD aftermath, BC focuses on the fear and panic within the conflict. -Both show the endured trauma and disregard of human life in war.

War Photographer: both show the impact of conflict- BC shows the first hand perspective and the lack of care from those with control of the situation. WP shows the outside perspective and that same lack of care from those distanced/ with no control over the situation-

(Presents the overall idea that there is a wide disregard for soldiers regardless of involvement, and a wide impact for those traumatised regardless of POV.)
(King,H,Etc vs Bloody- one can abandon the ideals of war, the other is forced to burden them)
