Characteristics of organisms Flashcards
Characteristics of organisms
Cellular composition, metabolism, growth, excretion, responsiveness, movement, reporduction
cellular composition
the cell is the simplest unit that carries out functions of life; all living organisms are composed of cells
metabolism
all chemical process that take place in the body (to use or produce); there are building processes (anabolic) and breaking down processes (catabolic)
growth
when the anabolism exceeds catabolism in the metabolic processes, there is growth; (1) increase in size and/or (2) increase in number of cells
excretion
the result of metabolic processes is waste products that get separated and removed
responsiveness
the ability to sense and react to environmental stimuli
movement
Organism as a whole moves or cells within move
reproduction
ability to reproduce (cell reproduction or their own offspring)
