Characteristics of Living Organisms Flashcards
Explain movement.
Organisms move to find food, to get away from predators and in the case of plants; move towards light.
What is movement?
The ability to move.
What is reproduction?
The prevention of the extinction of a species.
To produce offspring.
To make more living things of the same type.
Explain growth.
Increasing in number/size of cells of an organism.
What is respiration?
The process of getting energy from food.
It is a chemical reaction that releases energy from glucose.
What is nutrition?
Taking in and using food.
Plants make their own food.
Animals eat other organisms.
What is sensitivity?
The ability to detect and respond to a change in an organisms’ surroundings.
Sunflowers move to follow the path of the sun.
What is homeostasis?
The ability to control the internal environment.
For example maintaining body temperature.
Explain excretion.
Removing the waste products from metabolism must be removed from organisms.
What is excretion?
The ability to get rid of waste products.
Explain sensitivity.
Organisms respond to their surroundings due to their sensory organs.
What is growth?
Organisms increase in size and mass.
Explain nutrition.
Obtaining nutrients for metabolism.
Explain reproduction.
Preventing the extinction of the species by increasing the number in a population through the fusion of gametes or cloning.
Explain respiration.
Releasing energy from glucose by chemical reaction.
