Characteristics of Life Flashcards
made of Cells
The cell is the basic unit of life.
Unicellular = bacteria
Multicellular = you can see it w/ the naked eye
maintains Homeostasis
Internal balance/stability
- temperature
- blood pressure
- pulse
obtains and uses Energy
Autotroph = plants make their own food Heterotroph = animals consume their food
Evolves and adapts
change over time
Reproduce, grow, develop
Reproduction: Sexual = 2; Asexual = 1
Growth: Increase in cell size and number
Develop = to differentiate and mature
responds to Stimulus
Stimulus = anything that triggers the organism
External = outside(touch something hot)
Internal =inside(blood sugar to low makes you hungry
What surrounds a cell and separates it from its environment?
Plasma Membrane
How is the growth of a living thing different from the growth of a nonliving thing?
Living things grows internally, while nonliving things just add on to the outside
