Cell Parts Flashcards
sac of digestive enzymes that breaks down food or unwanted cells or cell parts
Lysosomes
Membrane sacs inside chloroplasts that contain the enzymes for photosynthesis
Thylakoids
Dark spot in the nucleus of a non-dividing cell where RNA for ribosomes is made
Nucleus
Powerhouse of the cell with its own DNA that burns glucose for energy and stores it as ATP
Mitochondria
Photosynthesizing organelle that contains chlorophyll in thylakoid sacs and its own DNA found in plants
Chloroplasts
Cell which has a nuclear membrane and membrane around its organelles
Eukaryote
Phospholipid and protein bilayer that surrounds ALL cells and controls which molecules enter or leave
Cell Membrane
This organelle looks like a stack of pancakes. It modifies, sorts, and packages molecules the cell makes for export
Golgi Body
Storage space for food, waste, and enzymes that is larger in plant cells and smaller in animal cells
Vacuole
Contains the genetic material (DNA) and acts as the control center of the cell
Nucleus
Molecule used by cells to store and transport energy for cell activities
ATP(Adenosine Triphosphate)
Found outside the cell membrane in plants and bacteria, this supports and protects cells.
Cell Wall
Membrane system which modifies and transports molecules made on its attached ribosomes
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
Folded inner membrane in mitochondria which increases surface area for chemical reactions
Cristae
Cell which has NO nucleus or organelles surrounded by membranes
Molecule with a polar head and two hydrophobic tails which forms cell membranes
Phospholipids
Many, short hair-like structures made of microtubules that are attatched to the outside of cells which help move the cell or move things past the cell
Cilia
Small structures, free or attached to the ER, which synthesize proteins
Ribosomes
DNA and proteins that are spread out in the nucleus of non-dividing cels
Chromatin
DNA and proteins that are scrunched up into rod shaped sructures in dividing cells
Log-like structures that appear in animal cells to guide the chromosomes apart in dividing cells
centrioles
Small, internal structure in a cell which carries out a specific job
organelle
Network of microtubules and microfilamets that give the cell shape, support, and help in movement
Cytoskeleton
