Characteristics of Life Flashcards
Explain the term continuity of life
Continuity of life is the ability of an organism to exist from one generation to the next.
What is Metabolism?
Metabolism is the chemical reaction that occurs in the cells of living organisms
What are anabolic reactions?
Anabolic reactions use energy to join small molecules together to form larger molecules e.g. photosynthesis
What are catabolic reactions?
Catabolic reactions break down large molecules, releasing energy. e.g respiration
What traits do you need to achieve continuity of life?
Reproduction and heredity
What are genes?
Genes are hereditary factors that are passed on from one generation to the next during reproduction.
Life is defined as the possession of what characteristic?
Reproduction, Excretion, Nutrition, Organisation and Response
Organisation meaning
Living things are composed of cells, tissues, organs and organ systems
Define Nutrition
The way in which an organism obtains / uses food.
What is the source of nutrition for animals?
Animals feed off other organisms
What is the source of nutrition for Plants?
Photosynthesis
What is the basic source of energy for all nutrients
The Sun
Excretion
The removal of Waste products of metabolism from an organism
Animals excrete waste using…
Urinary System, Skin, Lungs
Plants excrete waste using…
Stomata
