Cell Diversity Flashcards
What is a tissue?
A tissue is a group of similar cells that are adapted to carry out the same function.
Whats a dermal tissue?
A single layer of cells that surrounds the different parts of plants.
Whats the main function of dermal tissue?
to protect the plant.
What is the function of the vascular tissue?
To transport materials around a plant. 2 types xylem and phloem.
Function of Xylem?
to transport water
Function of Phloem?
transport food from the leaves to the other parts of the plant.
Connective Tissues consist of…
They consist of a number of different types of cells spread out in a matrix.
What do nervous tissues do?
carry messages to and from the spinal cord and brain.
What are nervous tissues composed of?
nerve cells called neurons.
Conditions needed for tissue growth?
Sterile, energy source, growth hormones, optimum temperature.
What is tissue culture?
the growth of cells in or on a sterile nutrient medium outside an organism.
Whats micropropagation?
the growth of large numbers of plants from very small plant pieces e.g. tissues or cells.
What is a Skin Graft
A type of tissue culture. Can be used to grow new skin for patients who have been badly burnt.
Whats an organ?
an organ is a structure composed of a number of tissues that work together to carry out one or more functions.
