Cell Structure Flashcards
What is a compound microscope?
A compound microscope is a microscope that has two magnifying lenses:
- The eyepiece
- The objective lens
What is the difference between an electron microscope and a light microscope?
Electron microscopes use electrons instead of light, they have a much lower wavelength.
What are cells? Where do they come from?
Cells are the basic units of structure and function in an organism.
Cells can come only from reproduction of existing cells.
What are organelles?
An organelle is a cell component that preforms specific functions for the cell
What is the protoplasm?
The protoplasm are all the living parts of the cell e.g. nucleus, cytoplasm.
What fluid does the vacuole in the plant cell contain?
cell sap
Purpose of the vacuole
to give the cell strength, shape and also store materials.
Define ultrastructure
Ultrastructure is the fine detail of a cell as seen with an
electron microscope.
How are the phospholipids arranged in a cell membrane?
Arranged in bilayers
Function of the membrane?
Membranes function is to retain the cell contents, controls what enters and leaves the cell, gives support.
What do nuclear pores control?
The movement of substances
What does the nucleolus contain?
RNA and DNA and proteins.
What do Mitochondria do
They supply energy to the cell in a process known as respiration. The inner membrane of the mitochondria produces the energy.
What are thylakoids?
Thylakoids contain chlorophyll which absorb the suns energy. Stack called grana.
What are Ribosomes made of and what is their purpose?
Ribosomes are made of RNA and protein. Function is to make protein
