Characteristics Of Life Flashcards
Unicellular = 1 cell multicellular = more than 1 cell *cell is the basic unit of life
Made of one or more cells
Living organisms are arranged in an orderly way (textbook pg. 5)
Displays Organization
Growth - addition of new mass (e.g. cells added on) Development - process of natural changes (e.g. metamorphosis)
Grow and Develop
Asexual - 1 “parent” (genetically identical) Sexual reproduction - 2 “parents” (genetically unique) ”species” —> can breed and produce viable offspring (offspring that can also reproduce)
Reproduces
Stimulus = anything that causes a reaction Response = reaction to a stimulus (e.g. bright light turns on, pupils constrict)
Responds to Stimuli
Autotroph - produces its own food (plants) Heterotroph - requires an input of food (animals)
Requires Energy
Definition - regulation of an organisms internal environment Endotherm - regulate body temp Ectotherm - relies on environment for body temp (Fossy)
Maintain Homeostasis
Any inherited characteristic that results from changes to a species over time
Adaptations evolve over time
