B3: Obtaining Nutrients Flashcards
Autotroph / autotrophic
Organisms that produce their own nutrients using environmental energy
Heterotroph/ Heterotrophic
Organisms that rely on ingesting or absorbing other organisms (plants, animals, etc) for nutrients
Endocytosis
Process by which single-celled organisms (i.e. amoeba) ingest food, by folding in a portion of their cell membrane and forming a food vacuole/ vesicle which will later be digested
Photosynthetic autotrophs
Autotrophs that have chlorophyll molecules that absorb sunlight to generate sugar through photosynthesis.
Chloroplasts/ Chlorophyll
Chloroplast - double membrane containing chlorophyll where photosynthesis takes place
Chlorophyll - natural compound in plants that gives them a green colour. It alos helps plants absorb the light from the sun and use it to undergo photosynthesis
Photosynthesis
Processed used by plants and some other organisms, to be able to convert light (sunlight) to energy, to fuel cell functions
Chemosynthetic Autotrophs
Autotrophs that harness energy relased by organic chemical compunds (i.e. sulfur), used by organisms that live in areas with no sunlight
