B.4: Energy In Nutrients Flashcards
Cellular respiration / ATP
Metabolism of food molecules in cells in order to create ATP (adenosine triphosphate) - energy currency of cells
Mitochondria
Powerhouse of the cell, organelle that is the “site” of energy production
Areobic respiration
Respirtaion where tiny mitochondria have a highly folded inner membrane to allow mass production of ATP
Anaerobic respiration
Respiration with the lack if mitochindria, meaning ATP is produced more slowly
Obligate aerobe
Requires oxygen to perform cellular reapiration
Obligate anaerobe
Requires an oxygen-free environment
because oxygen is lethal to them. Performs fermentation instead of cellular respiration
Facultative anaerobe
Organisms that can switch between cellular respiration and fermentation, depending on environmental conditions
Fermentation
Cellular respiration occuring in the absence of oxygen
