Reticular activating system
Neurologic circuits in the brain that control the functions of staying awake, paying attention, and sleeping
Diabetes mellitus
Decreased insulin production or inability of the body cells to use insulin properly
Type 1- insulin dependent: pancreatic cells fail to function properly and insulin is not secreted properly
Type 2- non insulin dependent: the body is secreting enough insulin but the body is unable to use it to move glucose out of the blood and into the cells
Hypoglycemia

Infection, body response to an infection
Tonic clonic seizure
Tonic- body becomes rigid stiffening for no more than 30 seconds
Clonic- the body jerks about violently for no more than 1 to 2 min patient may foam at the mouth and drool lips become cyanotic
Postictal- begins when convulsions stop may regain consciousness immediately and enter a state of drowsiness and confusion or may remain unconscious for several hours headache is common
Aura
Sensation the patient has when a seizure is about to begin smell, sound, general feeling
Hypoxia
Lack of oxygen
Epilepsy
A medical condition that causes seizures
Stroke
Cerebral vascular accident
Injury of brain tissue that is deprived of oxygen
Blockage of an artery that supplies blood to part of the brain or bleeding from a ruptured blood vessel in the brain
